BREEAM-NL is an assessment method to determine the sustainability performance of buildings
In the Netherlands, the demand for sustainable buildings has risen sharply. These contribute to climate goals by saving energy and reducing CO2.
The label BREEAM stands for "Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method" and is a measurement tool of the DGBC for assessing the sustainability of buildings. BREEAM-NL is the most widely used certification scheme in the Netherlands for monitoring energy performance.

Methodology
BREEAM-NL is the tool for integrally measuring and assessing the sustainability of new buildings, existing buildings, areas and demolition projects. BREEAM-NL focuses on offices, schools, stores, industrial buildings and homes.
BREEAM-NL is an assessment method for determining the sustainability performance of buildings. The method includes four different labels:
(Different requirements apply to specific buildings such as data centers and special buildings 'bespoke' that qualify for a custom BREEAM-NL pathway)
(for management and use of existing buildings)
The point system works as follows: the more points, the more sustainable. As a total score, a building is given a rating of pass, good, very good, excellent or outstanding (1 to 5 stars). The points, called credits, are earned on the basis of evidence collected through studies in areas such as water, ecology, energy and waste. Recommendations follow from these studies, which can make the design of the building or location more sustainable.

Commissioning Managers
Commissioning is a phased process aimed at quality control and performance assurance of installations and applies to both new and existing buildings. In the case of retro commissioning, a commissioning manager checks whether the installations in the building (still) meet the requirements as they were (once) set. This means that there is an integral look at whether the installations are working properly by checking:
- Design of installations
- Implementation of installations (detecting installation errors)
- Verification of inspection reports and/or measurements
Harmosation
BREEAM-NL is not the only sustainability label for buildings used in the Netherlands. For example, we also have the Energy Label (EPA), the EPC standard, GreenCalc, GPR-Gebouw, Eco-Quantum and LEED. The DGBC strives for harmonization with the other systems. The energy label and BENG are required by law and are now fully integrated into BREEAM-NL.
